A KILLER IN YOUR FRIDGE - SWEET POISON A MUST READ!

This information may help you please read with an open mind and then ask questions.

I found this very interesting - I am happy to see that more information is being presented to the public.

I for one, DO NOT - drink any carbonated drinks, DO NOT - use any sugar replacement if one needs sugar remember to look into xylitol.

DO - read all labels and if in doubt do not buy or eat it.

If you know anyone that does drink diet pop you may wish to pass this on to them....

This article may belong; at the bottom, I have also included notes from the Mayo Clinic on this subject.

From Linda Rice:  Pass this along to anyone you think may be interested. Aspartame sugar substitute

In October of 2001, my sister started getting very sick She had stomach spasms and she was having a hard time getting around. Walking was a major chore. It took everything she had just to get out of bed; she was in so much pain.

By March 2002, she had undergone several tissues and muscle biopsies and was on 24 various prescription medications. The doctors could not determine what was wrong with her. She was in so much pain, and so sick she just knew she was dying.

She put her house, bank accounts, life insurance, etc., in her oldest daughter's name, and made sure that her younger children were to be taken care of.

She also wanted her last hooray, so she planned a trip to Florida (basically in a wheelchair) for March 22nd.

On March 19, I called her to ask how her most recent tests went, and she said they didn't find anything on the test, but they believe she had MS.

I recalled an article a friend of mine e-mailed to me and I asked my sister if she drank diet soda? She told me that she did. As a matter of fact, she was getting ready to crack one open that moment.

I told her not to open it, and to stop drinking the diet soda! I e-mailed her an article my friend, a lawyer, had sent. My sister called me within 32 hours after our phone conversation and told me she had stopped drinking the diet soda AND she could walk! The muscle spasms went away. She said she didn't feel 100% but, she sure felt a lot better.

She told me she was going to her doctor with this article and would call me when she got home.

Well, she called me, and said her doctor was amazed! He is going to call all of his MS patients to find out if they consumed artificial sweeteners of any kind. In a nutshell, she was being poisoned by the Aspartame in the diet soda.. and literally dying a slow and miserable death

When she got to Florida March 22, all she had to take was one pill, and that was a pill for the Aspartame poisoning! She is well on her way to a complete recovery. And she is walking! No wheelchair! This article saved her life.If it says 'SUGAR-FREE' on the label; DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!I have spent several days lecturing at the WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE on 'ASPARTAME,' marketed as'Nutra Sweet,' 'Equal,' and 'Spoonful.'In the keynote address by the EPA, it was announced that in the United States in 2001 there is an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus. It was difficult to determine exactly what toxin was causing this to be rampant. I stood up and said that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject.

I will explain why Aspartame is so dangerous: When the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants. The methanol toxicity mimics, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus.

Many people were being diagnosed in error. Although multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, Methanol toxicity is!

Systemic lupus has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers. The victim usually does not know that the Aspartame is the culprit. He or she continues its use; irritating lupus to such a degree that it may become a life-threatening condition. We have seen patients with systemic lupus become asymptotic, once taken off diet sodas.

In cases of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, most of the symptoms disappear. We've seen many cases where vision loss returned and hearing loss improved markedly.

This also applies to cases of tinnitus and fibromyalgia. During a lecture, I said, 'If you are using ASPARTAME (Nutra Sweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc) and you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting, pains, numbness in your legs,
Cramps,
Vertigo,
Dizziness,
Headaches,
Tinnitus,
Joint pain,
Unexplainable depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss; you probably have ASPARTAME poisoning!' People were jumping up during the lecture saying, I have some of these symptoms. Is it reversible?'

Yes! Yes! Yes!

STOP drinking diet sodas and be alert for Aspartame on food labels! Many products are fortified with it! This is a serious problem. Dr. Espart (one of my speakers) remarked that so many people seem to be symptomatic for MS and during his recent visit to a hospice; a nurse stated that six of her friends, who were heavy Diet Coke addicts, had all been diagnosed with MS. This is beyond coincidence!

Diet soda is NOT a diet product! It is a chemically altered, multiple SODIUM (salt) and ASPARTAME containing product that actually makes you crave carbohydrates.

It is far more likely to make you GAIN weight!

These products also contain formaldehyde, which stores in the fat cells, particularly in the hips and thighs. Formaldehyde is an absolute toxin and is used primarily to preserve 'tissue specimens.'

Many products we use every day contain this chemical but we SHOULD NOT store it IN our body!

Dr. H. J. Roberts stated in his lectures that once free of the 'diet products' and with no significant increase in exercise; his patients lost an average of 19 pounds over a trial period.Aspartame is especially dangerous for diabetics. We found that some physicians, who believed that they had a patient with retinopathy, in fact, had symptoms caused by Aspartame. The Aspartame drives the blood sugar out of control. Thus diabetics may suffer acute memory loss due to the fact that aspartic acid and phenylalanine are NEUROTOXIC when taken without the other amino acids necessary for a good balance.

Treating diabetes is all about BALANCE.. Especially with diabetics, the Aspartame passes the blood/brain barrier and it then deteriorates the neurons of the brain; causing various levels of brain damage, Seizures, Depression, Manic depression, Panic attacks, Uncontrollable anger, and rage. Consumption of Aspartame causes these same symptoms in non-diabetics as well. Documentation and observation also reveal that thousands of children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD have had complete turnarounds in their behavior when these chemicals have been removed from their diet.

So called 'behavior modification prescription drugs' (Ritalin and others) are no longer needed.Truth be told, they were never NEEDED in the first place! Most of these children were being 'poisoned' on a daily basis with the very foods that were 'better for them than sugar.'It is also suspected that the Aspartame in thousands of pallets of diet Coke and diet Pepsi consumed by men and women fighting in the Gulf War, may be partial to blame for the well-known Gulf War Syndrome.

Dr. Roberts warns that it can cause birth defects, i.e. mental retardation if taken at the time of conception and during early pregnancy. Children are especially at risk for neurological disorders and should NEVER be given artificial sweeteners.

There are many different case histories to relate of children suffering grand mal seizures and other neurological disturbances talking about a plague of neurological diseases directly caused by the use of this deadly poison.'

Herein lies the problem: There were Congressional Hearings when Aspartame was included in 100 different products and strong objection was made concerning its use. Since this initial hearing, there have been two subsequent hearings, and still, nothing has been done. The drug and chemical lobbies have very deep pockets.

Sadly, MONSANTO'S patent on Aspartame has EXPIRED! There are now over 5,000 products on the market that contain this deadly chemical and there will be thousands more introduced. Everybody wants a 'piece of the Aspartame pie.'I assure you that MONSANTO, the creator of Aspartame, knows how deadly it is.

And isn't it ironic that MONSANTO funds, among others, the American Diabetes Association, the American Dietetic Association and the Conference of the American College of Physicians?

This has been recently exposed in the New York Times. These [organizations] cannot criticize any additives or convey their link to MONSANTO because they take money from the food industry and are required to endorse their products.Senator Howard Metzenbaum wrote and presented a bill that would require label warnings on products containing Aspartame, especially regarding pregnant women, children, and infants.

The bill would also institute independent studies on the known dangers and the problems existing in the general population regarding seizures, changes in brain chemistry, neurological changes and behavioral symptoms.  The bill was killed. It is known that the powerful drug and chemical lobbies are responsible for this, letting loose the hounds of disease and death on an unsuspecting and uninformed public. Well, you're informed now!

Mayo Clinic on Diet soda and sweeteners. . .

Question: Diet soda: Is it bad for you?

Answer: from Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D.

Drinking a reasonable amount of diet soda a day, such as a can or two, isn't likely to hurt you. The artificial sweeteners and other chemicals currently used in diet soda are safe for most people, and there's no credible evidence that these ingredients cause cancer.

Some types of diet soda are even fortified with vitamins and minerals. But diet soda isn't a health drink or a silver bullet for weight loss. Although switching from regular soda to diet soda may save you calories in the short term, it's not yet clear if it's effective for preventing obesity and related health problems.

Healthier low-calorie choices abound, including water, skim milk, and unsweetened tea or coffee.

Possible health concerns with natural sweeteners

So-called natural sweeteners are generally safe. But there's no health advantage to consuming added sugar of any type. And consuming too much-added sugar, even natural sweeteners, can lead to health problems such as tooth decay, poor nutrition, weight gain and increased triglycerides. Also, be aware that honey can contain small amounts of bacterial spores that can produce botulism toxin. Because of that, honey shouldn't be given to children less than 1-year-old.

Moderation is key with sugar substitutes

When choosing sugar substitutes, it pays to be a savvy consumer. Get informed and look beyond the hype. While artificial sweeteners and sugar substitutes may help with weight management, they aren't a magic bullet and should be used only in moderation.

Just because a food is marketed as sugar-free doesn't mean it's free of calories. If you eat too many sugar-free foods, you can still gain weight if they have other ingredients that contain calories. And remember that processed foods, which often contain sugar substitutes, generally don't offer the same health benefits as do whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables.

What is Hyperventilation Syndrome?

The practice talked about in the flowing article is one that I use and it just came naturally to me. Good stuff – This told me that when I hyperventilated I was and I am doing the right thing. In fact, most often I go outside if it is cool out and breathe deeply and it goes away quickly. In the summer if hot outside, I run cool water on the hands, wrists, and arms, breathing deeply, somehow cooling my body helps and breathing deeply, calms me down. Breathing into a paper bag is out!

Hope you find something in this article that will help you.

What is Hyperventilation Syndrome?

Do you ever experience difficulty in taking a deep breath? Do you feel dizzy or lightheaded?

Do you feel like you are suffocating?

If your answer is "Yes", then you may be experiencing "hyperventilation syndrome".

Basically, hyperventilation syndrome is a respiratory disorder involving an increased depth and rate of breathing greater than what your body needs. It usually occurs in the wake of extreme stress and mental pressure.

Who is at greater risk of hyperventilation syndrome?

According to the records, we have gathered, hyperventilation syndrome occurs most often among TV or radio talents, especially women. We believe that it has something to do with stress for that kind of work. Also, we have learned that the usual first aid being given to hyperventilating patients might be wrong.

Can breathing into a Paper Bag Treat Hyperventilation Syndrome?

I remember watching a movie wherein a scene shows a stewardess attending a hyperventilating patient in a jet plane using a paper bag. Paper bags have been used since the time of our great-grandparents as a first aid for hyperventilation syndrome. This has been a very common procedure worldwide.

http://www.pyroenergen.com/articles12/images/hyperventilation-syndrome-paperbag.jpg

However, today, it is known that breathing into a paper bag is an improper way of giving first aid to hyperventilating patients and is no longer advised or taught.

How come this kind of practice became universally known?

Hyperventilation syndrome or excessive breathing causes a loss of carbon dioxide from the lungs. The theory of breathing into a paper bag is that by re-breathing the exhaled carbon dioxide, your body can regain the lost carbon dioxide.

This technique, however, is not without risks.

In fact, breathing into a paper bag can make things worse and lead to death.

A local medical bulletin stated that this long-time practiced paper bag method for hyperventilation syndrome is not the right way. Breathing into a paper bag prevents you from getting fresh air. Without it, you get too little oxygen. Therefore, breathing into a paper bag can dangerously lower the amount of oxygen in your blood.

How to Properly Treat Hyperventilation Syndrome

We were able to observe patients with hyperventilation syndrome in emergency rooms of hospitals. The patients are having severe hyperventilation symptoms—chest pain, palpitation, trembling, numbness, fainting, and shortness of breath. They look like they are having a heart attack. After an hour or two, practically all patients with hyperventilation syndrome were able to get up and walk normally and go home as if nothing happened.

What did they do? Nope. They did not use the paper bag method.

They were simply taught to breathe properly and wait for a while. In most cases, the symptoms will stop in just a few minutes. This is the best treatment known so far. The paper bag method is no longer recommended nowadays. By learning how to take slow, deep, even breaths, you will be able to counteract your breathing troubles. Practice this healthy breathing pattern every day and you'll be free from frightening symptoms and hyperventilation syndrome.

Mayo Clinic - Water

IMPORTANT INFO

How many folks do you know who say they don't want to drink anything before going to bed because they'll have to get up during the night!!

Heart Attack and Water - I never knew all of this! Interesting.......

Something else I didn't know ... I asked my Doctor why do people need to urinate so much at night time. Answer from my Cardiac Doctor -
Gravity holds water in the lower part of your body when you are upright (legs swell). When you lie down and the lower body (legs and etc) seeks level with the kidneys, it is then that the kidneys remove the water because it is easier. This then ties in with the last statement!
I knew you need your minimum water to help flush the toxins out of your body, but this was news to me.

The correct time to drink water... Very Important. From A Cardiac Specialist!

Drinking water at a certain time maximizes its effectiveness on the body:
2 glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs
1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion
1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure
1 glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack

I can also add to this... My Physician told me that water at bed time will also help prevent night time leg cramps. Your leg muscles are seeking hydration when they cramp and wake you up with a Charlie Horse.

Mayo Clinic- what to do. . .Heart attacks occur. . .

Mayo Clinic on Aspirin

Mayo Clinic Aspirin Dr. Virend Somers is a Cardiologist from the Mayo Clinic, who is the lead author of the report in the July 29, 2008, issue of the Journal of the AmericanCollege of Cardiology.

Most heart attacks occur in the day, generally between 6 A.M. and noon. Having one during the night, when the heart should be most at rest, means that something unusual happened. Somers and his colleagues have been working for a decade to show that sleep apnea is to blame.

1. If you take an aspirin or a baby aspirin once a day, take it at night.
The reason: Aspirin has a 24-hour "half-life"; therefore, if most heart attacks happen in the wee hours of the morning, the Aspirin would be strongest in your system.

2. FYI, Aspirin lasts a really long time in your medicine chest for years, (when it gets old, it smells like vinegar).

Please read on.

Something that we can do to help ourselves - nice to know.
Bayer is making crystal aspirin to dissolve instantly on the tongue.
They work much faster than the tablets.

Why keep Aspirin by your bedside? It's about Heart Attacks -

There are other symptoms of a heart attack, besides the pain on the left arm. One must also be aware of an intense pain on the chin, as well as nausea and lots of sweating; however, these symptoms may also occur less frequently.

Note: There may be NO pain in the chest during a heart attack.

The majority of people (about 60%) who had a heart attack during their sleep did not wake up.
However, if it occurs, the chest pain may wake you up from your deep sleep.

If that happens, immediately dissolve two aspirins in your mouth and swallow them with a bit of water.

Afterward: - Call 911. - Phone a neighbor or a family member who lives very close by. - Say "heart attack!" - Say that you have taken 2 Aspirins. - Take a seat on a chair or sofa near the front door, and wait for their arrival and ...DO NOT LIE DOWN!

A Cardiologist has stated that if each person after reading this tells ten people, probably one life could be saved!

"Life is a one time gift"

Can cholesterol-lowering drugs affect memory?

By JOE & TERESA GRAEDON, PH.D.

Can cholesterol-lowering drugs affect memory?

That is a question we have wrestled with for nearly six years.

It started when we received a letter from a woman who complained that several months after starting on Lipitor; she was “having trouble remembering names and coming up with the right word. At dinner once I said, ‘Please pass the elephant’ thought I wanted the bread.”

We didn’t know what to make of this concern because we could find nothing in the medical literature connecting statin-type medicines like Lipitor to memory loss. Before long, however, letters started pouring in.

One reader wrote: “Thank you. Validation at last! I have had enormous problems with concentration. I get confused and feel like there are big, ugly holes burned in my memory. I am certain that Lipitor is causing my problems, but my doctor refuses to believe me and denies any connection.”

Letters like these led us to suspect that some people develop cognitive problems on statins. We became alarmed when we received this story:

“I am a retired family doctor and former astronaut. Two years ago at my annual astronaut physical at Johnson Space Center, I was started on Lipitor. Six weeks later I experienced my first episode of total global amnesia lasting six hours. They couldn’t find anything wrong with me, so I suspected Lipitor and discontinued it.”

“Other doctors and pharmacists were unaware of similar problems. Believing it must have been a coincidence, I restarted Lipitor a year later. After six weeks I landed in the ER with a 12-hour episode of total global amnesia. I am more convinced than ever of a Lipitor relationship.”

The astronaut-physician is Duane Graveline. In response to his experience, we heard from other readers who had suffered episodes of total global amnesia while taking Lipitor, Zocor or similar drugs.

Total global amnesia is a temporary but frightening loss of memory. Dr. Graveline forgot that he was a physician for an astronaut and didn’t even recognize his wife. He has summarized his experiences in a new book called Statin Drugs: Side Effects and the Misguided War on Cholesterol.

Recently we heard of another disturbing experience. Michael Kirk-Duggan was a retired professor of business law and computer science. He was diagnosed with probable Alzheimer’s disease that was progressing very rapidly. He went to his 50th college reunion with a sign around his neck that said: “I’m Mike. I have Alzheimer’s disease.” At his youngest daughter’s wedding, he did not recognize people he had known more than 20 years.

His decline made it clear that he would need long-term nursing care. But then he read our column about statins and memory problems. With his doctor’s awareness, he discontinued the Zocor he had been taking. Although it took many months, he gradually regained his memory and cognitive ability. He is back to reading three newspapers a day and is sharp as a tack. A complete neurological workup showed no signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Cholesterol-lowering drugs save lives. Many people take them safely. But for those few who develop memory problems, such drugs can be devastating. More research into this complicated issue is urgently needed.

No. 5 Superfood: Buckwheat

Dr. Perricone's No. 5 Superfood: Buckwheat

Seed, Grain and Health Powerhouse
Though it is usually thought of as a grain, buckwheat is actually the seed of a broadleaf plant related to rhubarb. While it is not a true grain, it is used like one in cooking, and it surpasses rice, wheat, and corn on almost every measure of healthfulness (including the fact that rice, wheat, and corn are high on the glycemic scale, thus provoking a quick spike in blood sugar levels, a proven promoter of systemic inflammation). Buckwheat, on the other hand, ranks low on the glycemic scale.

Hulled buckwheat kernels (called groats) are pale tan-to-green, while the roasted buckwheat groats are known as kasha—a staple food in Eastern Europe—are dark brown with a nutty flavor. Kasha is often steamed in a stock with onions, olive oil, and fresh parsley, and you can combine equal parts plain buckwheat groats and oats, and cook the mix to enjoy as a hot breakfast cereal topped with berries. Buckwheat has been cultivated for at least 1,000 years in China, Korea, and Japan, where it is often enjoyed in the form of buckwheat "soba" noodles—a form that's become increasingly popular in the West as a healthy substitute for wheat pasta.

Buckwheat has more protein than rice, wheat, millet or corn and is high in the essential amino acids lysine and arginine, in which major cereal crops are deficient. Its unique amino acid profile gives buckwheat the power to boost the protein value of beans and cereal grains eaten the same day. Yet, buckwheat contains no gluten—the source of protein in true grains—and is, therefore, safe for people with gluten allergy or celiac disease.

Buckwheat Protein's Unique Health-Promoting Properties:

  • The specific characteristics of buckwheat proteins and the relative proportions of its amino acids make buckwheat the unsurpassed cholesterol-lowering food studied to date.
  • Its protein characteristics also enhance buckwheat's ability to reduce and stabilize blood sugar levels following meals—a key factor in preventing diabetes and obesity.
  • Like the widely prescribed "ACE" hypertension drugs, buckwheat proteins reduce the activity of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), thereby reducing hypertension.

HEARTNEWS January 2013

The following are news items and opinions. This is NOT medical dvice.

How To Relieve Heart Burn & Acid Reflux

Of course, avoiding the foods that aggravate it is the first thing to do.

1. Slippery Elm Bark

Almost immediate relief will come from using Slippery Elm Bark which fortunately is available in capsule form.

2. Raw Aloe Vera Gel

The number one reason people drink raw aloe vera gel (inner leaf only - not whole leaf) is for the benefits against acid reflux.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

Take a daily dose of Apple Cider Vinegar and water until your heartburn/GERD is gone, then drink it once a week for life and you shouldn't have those issues again.

4. Activated Charcoal

A simple remedy for heartburn and acid reflux is to take Activated Charcoal Tablets/Capsules.  Activated Charcoal will absorb ALL items in your system... Vitamins, Minerals plus any medications that are in your system. Normally Activated Charcoal is taken if one experiences food poisoning, but it is a good method for clearing everything out and starting again. You can buy this in a health store or pharmacy.

5. Baking Soda

And of course a teaspoon of Baking Soda in a glass of water is the standby for many people.

Ultrasound Stops Prostate Cancer

Radiation is the standard method to try and stop prostate cancer, but the obvious drawback of radiation is that it's, you know, RADIATION!

In oncology, radiation is as common as candy corn this time of year. It's such a standard of care that patients don't recoil in horror. But they should. Few toxins on earth are even half as harmful as radiation. And, of course, there are adverse effects. These include diarrhea, rectal pain, and irritable bowels. As for long-range side effects, you can expect incontinence, impotence, and fatigue. The success rate of radiation for prostate cancer is about 50%.

Fortunately, we can do better. It's a new option called high-intensity focused ultrasound. In HIFU, ultrasound heats and kills prostate tumors. This therapy has been around for a while, but research is limited.  A new UK study changes all that.

University College London researchers report remarkable results. Nine out of 10 prostate cancer patients treated with HIFU were cancer-free at one year.

The men had few major side effects. No men experienced incontinence. Only one in ten reported impotence.

Based on this study, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence stated that HIFU is safe and effective. NIHCE officials also gave the green light to larger trials in the UK. Soooooooo, ask your doctor about Ultrasound rather than radiation if you opt for regular medical intervention.

How to better absorb iron

Lack of iron (anemia) is often caused by an absorption problem, especially among the elderly.

An excellent source for low iron prevention is unrefined apple cider vinegar as it acts like vitamin C as a reducing agent to increase absorption of iron. There are two ways to facilitate this. One way is to buy popular apple cider vinegar drinks. Another way is to prepare it yourself. What you will need for this is at least a 16-ounce bottle. After I give you the "how to" for 16 ounces, you can double it for 32 ounces or quadruple it for 64 ounces. You'll get the idea, I'm sure. So, in a 16-ounce bottle put in 4-5 tablespoons of unrefined apple cider vinegar, 9 drops of stevia or honey to taste, one quarter teaspoon of cinnamon, half the bottle filled with unrefined apple juice, and the rest of the bottle filled with unfluoridated water. Shake well and refrigerate. Bear in mind that the cinnamon will settle to the bottom so give it a good shake before drinking. A glass of this mixture a day will cause your system to extract more iron from your food.

Chew an aspirin if your having a heart attack

If you are having a heart attack immediately call 911, then chew an aspirin, said Dr. Noel Bairey Merz, director of the Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles.

A study in The American Journal of Cardiology highlighted its importance. In a group of 12 subjects tested in a laboratory, chewing an aspirin tablet for 30 seconds before swallowing on an empty stomach prompted a 50 percent reduction in platelet activity in five minutes. It took 12 minutes to achieve the same effect when the aspirin was swallowed whole. People who suspect they are having an attack should chew one full-strength tablet, which is 325 milligrams. But most important, is to get to an emergency room.

Supplements for Arthritis

Following is a list, in order of importance, of natural remedies that can enhance the results of diet and lifestyle changes. We are all biochemically unique; no single regimen will work equally well for one and all. For some people, cod liver oil will be enough to do the trick, while others may need to use a combination of six or more supplements for optimal symptom control.

If you have a history of liver disease, consult a physician before taking high doses of any nutritional supplement. As a general rule, take vitamins and minerals with meals and herbs on an empty stomach.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Cod liver oil helps to reverse osteoarthritis naturally, and is the best first-line therapy for any inflammatory condition. Cod, halibut and shark liver oils all contain healthy fats that stimulate the body to manufacture anti-inflammatory hormones called prostaglandins. Good results can be anticipated in three to six months. When combined with niacinamide and glucosamine sulphate, osteoarthritis can be significantly improved within six weeks or less. Dosage: Typical therapeutic dosages are nine to 12 grams daily of capsules, or two to three tablespoons of oil with meals.

Hemp Seed Oil

Another more palatable source of essential fatty acids is hemp seed oil, the production of which has recently been legalized in Canada. This oil contains nearly double the amount of anti-inflammatory essential fatty acids as other oils. It, too, is highly effective as an anti-inflammatory supplement. Dosage:A typical dose is two to three tablespoons daily, taken straight or mixed with soups, salads or nut butters (almond, sesame).

Niacinamide

This B vitamin may enhance glucocorticoid secretion, a naturally produced anti-inflammatory adrenal hormone. If taking niacinamide, supplement with other B-complex vitamins to achieve a proper balance. In one clinical study on the use of niacinamide (vitamin B3), 72 patients with osteoarthritis received either niacinamide or a placebo. Arthritis improved 29 percent in those taking niacinamide and while worsening by 10 percent in the placebo subjects. Beneficial effects begin between one and three months. Maximum benefit can be reached in one to three years. Dosage:1,000 milligrams four times daily with meals.

Clucosamine Sulphate

Numerous double-blind studies in the 1980s concluded that supplementation with glucosamine sulphate reverses osteoarthritis. Other studies show it to be superior in pain relief to NSAIDS, improving joint function and helping to reduce the pain of osteoarthritis. Glucosamine sulphate actually works to repair the damage done by osteoarthritis, not just treat the symptoms. Its effectiveness in treating the damage results in effective pain relief as well. Dosage:The usual effective dose for adults is 500 mg three times daily with meals.

Vitamin C

High doses of vitamin C have been proven to have an anti-inflammatory effect in osteoarthritis. In one study involving 640 participants, high doses of vitamin C reduced the progression of osteoarthritis by a factor of three. This related mostly to a reduced risk of cartilage loss. Those with high vitamin C intake also had a reduced risk of developing knee pain. A high intake of antioxidant nutrients, particularly vitamin C, may reduce the risk of cartilage loss and disease progression in people with osteoarthritis. Dosage:1,000 mg three times daily with meals, or to bowel tolerance (the point at which diarrhea from vitamin C occurs).

Vitamin E

At dosages of 800 IU daily, vitamin E may be a prostaglandin inhibitor similar to NSAIDS, but without the side-effects. Vitamin E decreases the blood levels of lipid (fat) peroxides and has been proven to be superior to placebo with respect to pain relief. Dosage:800 IU three times daily with meals.

Glutamine (or L-glutamine)

This amino acid supplement helps repair leaky gut syndrome, a phenomenon associated with most autoimmune forms of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Stress and inflammation increase the body's demand for glutamine. Studies have shown that supplementing glutamine can prevent muscle wasting, weight loss and other common problems encountered with RA. Dosage:  4,000 mg three times daily (best on empty stomach).

Vitamin D

Daily intake of vitamin D from cod or halibut liver oil is an effective osteoarthritis treatment, playing an essential role in calcium metabolism. This vitamin can also be obtained in adequate amounts from exposure to sunshine. After 20 minutes in the sun, a cholesterol derivative in the skin begins to manufacture. Dosage:  400 IU three times daily with meals.

Selenium

Daily supplementation with selenium helps elevate levels of glutathione peroxidase, a selenium-containing antioxidant enzyme that helps to detoxify the body and prevent cell damage. Dosage:  200 micrograms daily with meals.

Zinc and Copper

Levels of these minerals are often low in those suffering from osteoarthritis. Hair mineral analysis is one way of assessing zinc and copper levels in the body. Copper bracelets have been used effectively for pain control for many years. Dosage:Varies with individuals; consult with a health-care practitioner.

Manganese

This mineral is an important component of articular cartilage, and is helpful in treating osteoarthritis. Like iron, calcium, zinc and copper, manganese requires proper amounts of stomach acid for its absorption. It may be deficient in people with a low output of stomach hydrochloric acid. Dosage:  15 to 30 mg daily with meals.

Chondroitin Sulphate

This supplement has been found to be effective for osteoarthritis sufferers. The healing effects of chondroitin sulphate were all studied with the injectable form. But although very poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, chondroitin sulphate taken orally appears to have a beneficial effect. When taken together, glucosamine sulphate and chondroitin sulphate work synergistically to decrease destruction of cartilage and stimulate its production. Dosage:  500 mg three times daily with meals.

Methyl Sulfonyl Methane (MSM)

This natural form of organic sulphur is a critical component of the amino acids methionine, cysteine and cystine, which are contained in the cellular proteins of all living organisms. Sulphur is needed for the proteins of hair, nails and skin, as well as for glutathione, one of the body's most important antioxidants. A deficiency of MSM can result in fatigue and an increased susceptibility to arthritis. MSM is present in raw fruits, vegetables and some grains, but is commonly lost during cooking, food processing and storage. Dosage:  3,000 mg three times daily with meals. It's most effective when combined with vitamin C (three to six grams daily).

Quercetin

This is a naturally occurring bioflavonoid that has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Quercetin helps reduce the formation of leukotrienes, which are substances associated with the symptoms of most autoimmune diseases. It also prevents the breakdown of matrix of connective tissue. Dosage: 500 mg three times daily with meals.

Devil's Claw

This South African plant root is observed to have an action comparable to that of phenylbutazone (a NSAID) in several European studies. Besides anti-inflammatory glycosides, devil's claw also contains numerous complex constituents including the phytosterols, B-sitosterol and stigmasterol, unsaturated fatty acids, triterpenes and flavonoids. Its low toxicity potential makes it worth trying as part of a comprehensive natural regime to reverse osteoarthritis. Dosage: 500 mg three times daily (empty stomach).

Enzymes

Plant-based digestive enzymes (bromelain, papain) and pancreatin enzymes (animal based) are often used as oral supplements to enhance digestion. When these are taken on an empty stomach (about one hour away from food), they enter the bloodstream and work as powerful anti-inflammatory agents, reducing pain, swelling and infection while improving joint flexibility. Dosage:  Five capsules three times daily (empty stomach).

Boswellia:

This herb native to India has well-proven anti-arthritic effects. It helps prevent decreased cartilage and improves blood supply to the joints. Boswellia is often in combination products containing bromelain, yucca, devil's claw and other natural compounds. Dosage:  400 mg three times daily (empty stomach).

Ginger

Regular supplementation for three months or longer can reduce pain, swelling and inflammation caused by osteoarthritis in 75 per cent of people. Ginger is soothing for not only inflamed joints but also any inflamed parts of the gastrointestinal tract. Dosage:  1,000 mg three times daily (empty stomach).

Curcumin

The yellow pigment of the herb turmeric is called curcumin. In some studies it has been reported to be equally effective as cortisone without any of the associated side-effects. Curcumin is primarily effective as a natural anti-inflammatory agent. Dosage:  500 mg three times daily with meals.

Yucca

A saponin extract of the desert yucca plant helps reverse osteoarthritis within three months of use without side-effects. Dosage: 500 mg three times daily (empty stomach).
